With vacation behind us we have started off the week back with some manipulative stations. Students will work in small groups to rotate to 5 different activities that work on balance, strength, hand-eye coordination and dribbling/passing skills. Students really enjoyed the scooter maze and balancing on the balance boards without holding on to the wall or a buddy! Students also stomped and caught fleece balls that they flung into the air! Students also continued to practice their passing and dribbling skills with our mini basketballs!

As the weather gets warmer please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for phys ed class. Please dress your child is layers so if a student gets warm they can be comfortable. We will also be heading outside once the weather gets a bit warmer! On PE days make sure your child is wearing sneakers or brings sneakers to change into for class. This week in PE classes students practiced their striking skills with beach volleyballs. Students worked with pairs to strike the ball so their partner could strike it back. They used body control to strike the ball to their target. After some practice students had the opportunity to try to hit the ball over the big volleyball net. Students quickly realized that they had to use their legs and arms to get enough power to strike the ball over the net!!
We have set a date for the 2016 field day! It will be on Wednesday, June 1st on the field between Memorial School and Dale Street School. In past years, we have had parent volunteers help run activities. We will be sending out more information as the date gets closer. Make sure to mark your calendars!Students are rotating through various dribbling, shooting and passing stations with our mini basketballs. Students learned that they best way to have control of the basketball is by not slapping the ball with the palm of their hand but using their finger pads. Students also worked with a partner to practice their chest and bounce passing skills. Groups kept track of the amount of times they scored baskets to set a class record!
A new unit to Memorial School PE, students worked with Mrs. Carey, Mr. Grace and Mrs. Gelinas to learn the basics of yoga! Students worked on various breathing and relaxing techniques to start the class. They also practiced yoga poses such as rock, child's pose, triangle, tree, bridge, warrior 1, warrior 2, and downward dog to name a few. Students were able to perform simple stretches and tried to hold poses as a statue for 5 seconds. Students also had the opportunity to use our yoga pretzel cards to choose their own pose with a small group. They had a great time choosing their challenge with the different pretzel cards. Students had a great time and are looking forward to practicing their new poses at home!
Students just finished up their dance unit and had a blast moving and grooving to various types of music. Students explored moving to the beat of a song and adjusted their body movements to match the beat. Students also practiced mirroring movements to a peer in class through our fun song called "monkey in the middle" and "spotlight dancers". We also had fun following specific dance steps by dancing to popular dance song like the "YMCA", "chicken dance", "Limbo" and the very popular "Cha Cha Slide". Students also had the chance to showcase their own dance moves with some freestyle freeze dance. We brought out our projector and students got to choose a character to compete in a Just Dance competition! They had SO much fun and it became a favorite warm-up activity!
Students have been participating in GYMNASTICS in physical education classes the past two weeks. The gym floor is scatter with mats and students have been exploring with locomotor movements on their feet, animal walks across the mats, shape balances on mats and lastly special rolls on the flat and slanted mats. Kindergarten and First graders moved across the mats like bears, alligators, seals, spiders, crabs and a variety of different animals! They even had a chance to create their own animal walk. We were very impressed with their upper body and lower body strength and their ability to control their bodies to balance in a pose for 5 seconds. Students also learned how to pencil roll, log roll, egg roll and forward roll safely across a flat mat or a slanted mat. As an ending project, students are creating a mini gymnastics routine which they will have the chance to perform!
In the past few classes, students have been developing and practicing their kicking skills. Students have been practicing dribbling with their left and right feet to move the ball in various activities. Some of the students favorite games were follow the leader, soccer tag, 6 goal soccer, crab soccer, scooter scramble and goaaaaaaaaal kicking! Classes were able to try to set a school record on the amount of goals scored! We sure are having a fun time in PE!
